Gregory Kantor, who is known as 5 & A Dime has been making waves in the dance music industry for the past few years. Ever since 2010, when he started turning heads with his attention-grabbing mashups, 5 & A Dime has continued to get more and more popular, as he even got the chance to tour alongside Steve Aoki and Kendrick Lamar in 2013.
He’s already gathered the support of many huge dance music artists, such as Tiesto, DJ Snake, Afrojack, Quintino, The Chainsmokers and more, but this is only the beginning for him, as we’re sure he has a lot of other massive things in store for us. Recently, we’ve had the chance to speak with him, so if you want to know more about 5 & A Dime, check out our exclusive interview below!
1) Hello, 5 & A Dime. Where does EDM Nations find you today?
I’m currently down the beach for 4th of July! I made sure I brought some good headphones though to keep the music going.
2) Over the last few years, you’ve managed to become quite the successful DJ/producer. How has the journey been up until this point?
It’s been a pretty amazing ride so far. The industry is always changing so I enjoy pushing myself to new limits production wise. I still feel I have a long way to go until I am truly pleased with what I’ve made and accomplished though.
3) Ever since you began, can you tell us what has been the most memorable moment of your career?
That’s a tough question. I would say it’s a tie between going on tour with Steve Aoki & Kendrick Lamar and having Pipes be played by so many of the favorite artists that I look up to.
4) Right now, what do you think is the one thing that distinguishes you from other producers?
The music that I make always has a certain meaning and level of emotion that is special for me, and I hope others are able to connect with that. I guess you could say that my signature is a level of darkness or aggression that comes through in the emotion of my music. I have been writing a lot of new music recently and that will be a departure from some of my previous sounds. I am always willing to change my style for the sake of artistic development. I’m never scared to try new things and to combine unlikely pairings with music if it works.
5) You’ve just released a brand new tune “Make ‘Em Bounce”. How long have you been working on this one?
I think PEEKABOO and I worked on this record for a month or two and when it was finished we both were blown away.
6) What does this record say about your evolution as an artist?
For me it says that 5 & A Dime will always have a special place for dirty Bass music. It also starts to introduce some of the direction I will be pushing my sound over the coming months. Overall I love the way this record feels and it pushes what I want from the bass music scene.
7) When you aren’t performing or making new music, what kind of music do you prefer to listen to and who are some of your favorite artists at the moment?
I honestly listen to so much music in my spare time. Some that you would hear in my live shows or mixes and some not. I love high energy tracks, but also some more mellow songs as well. Some of my favorite artists at the moment are Sumthin Sumthin, TSURADA, and KRANE.
8) What do you have in store for the following months? Anything exciting you would like to share with our readers?
Yes! Plenty of new music is coming out throughout the rest of the year! I’ve been working so hard on these projects and am so happy to finally show everyone!
9) We have one final question for you. On the long run, what is the biggest goal you have in your musical career?
Another tough question! Honestly, I think my goal for the longer term is to play the major festivals and iconic venues in America and across the world. If I can share my music with as many people as possible “face to face” then i’ll be happy for a long time.
10) Thank you for your time!
It was a pleasure!
