In this exclusive interview, Freekbass joins us to dive into the making of ‘Good Time,’ exploring his creative process and what fans can expect next in his musical journey.
Hi Freekbass, how are you?
I’m good and busy, which is always good!
To start, can you discuss the meaning behind the title ‘Good Time’ and how it represents the overall vibe of the song?
Whenever I play music, it’s always a good time for me. This song was created on my TikTok Live streams, and my community there always lifts me up and inspires me to push myself to do things I didn’t know I had in me… and it’s always a good time.
How would you say this track reflects your current musical direction and artistic goals?
Funk is always the umbrella I live under, but I’ve always equally loved Dance and Electronic Music. Creating a musical bridge between the two has been something that is always inspiring to me, and I feel with each new single I release, including this one, I get a little further in that journey.
What was the first element you focused on when producing ‘Good Time’? Was it the rhythm, melody, or something else?
Generally, when I produce, rhythm is first. I started as a drummer, so when I play bass, I think of a beat that I add notes to. The same goes for other instruments too.
Tell us about the ways you incorporated live instruments into this track.
One of my formulas as a producer is to mix the electronic and the organic. For instance, if the drumbeat is programmed, I will play my bass line all live through the entire track, with no cutting and pasting, to help the track breathe.
Were you inspired by the work of any particular artist for ‘Good Time’? How did they inspire you?
Feel and groove-wise, a little bit by Chic. I’m a big Bernard Edwards fan (bassist of Chic), and I kind of had a feeling of his groove when initially creating the track.
How did you maintain the track’s momentum and energy throughout its duration?
As I mentioned earlier, I do a lot of the tracking and playing live, with no edits, to keep the track moving and breathing.
How did the vocal line influence the arrangement and production choices in the track? Did you have to make significant adjustments to accommodate it?
With all talks of rhythm, the melody is always the top of the iceberg. With that said, both with rhythm and harmonically, chord changes along with production always need to serve the main singing melody.
What has been the feedback from your fans and the music community since the release of ‘Good Time’?
It’s been great and inspiring. One of our community members at my TikTok (Cindy) actually named the track.
Can you share any details about upcoming projects you’re excited about?
I just did a collaboration with UK producer Jay Caruso, who specializes in Soulful House. It is a super funky Dance track that I played guitar, bass, and vocoder on. That is going to be dropping soon. Also, the bass guitar company, Dingwall, out of Canada, is making me a custom Freekbass bass, which I’m very excited about and can’t wait to start playing and recording with.
With ‘Good Time’ having shined a light on his ability to fuse live instrumentation with electronic elements, creating a unique sound for listeners to enjoy, Freekbass seems to be keeping his creative momentum high, remaining enthusiastic about his craft and artistic evolution. As he looks ahead, fans can no doubt anticipate even more innovative tracks that see him pushing his creative boundaries and finding new ways to make his mark.
