Having achieved the largest user base, Spotify has emerged as the focus of streaming numbers amongst artists and fans. The platform has revealed that recent years have seen a strong upward trajectory for one specific genre of electronic music.
The resurgence of Drum ‘n’ Bass is revealed in the massive uptick in streams that Spotify has seen since 2021. In the following years, the genre has surged with a 94% increase in listeners, many of them 34 years of age and younger, accounting for 68% of the current listeners. This UK trend has been led by artists such as Chase & Status, Bou, and Rudimental, all of whom have landed in the top 10 for most streams for the genre. With the revived interest in the genre, Spotify has also branched out to create a short documentary to further celebrate its impact.
Simply titled DnB: In For Life, the film is meant to “serve as a love letter” to the genre and its global impact. The film features an oral history of the genre as Charlie Tee, Flight, Kanine, S.P.Y. and more discuss the impact of Drum ‘n’ Bass and its roots. With more producers exploring different sounds and genres, fans can certainly expect to hear more Drum ‘n ‘ Bass in the coming years.
